MTB and E-Bike routes to explore Falcade and the Biois Valley, in the UNESCO Dolomites.
The routes suggested are merely indicative, and run along a variety of surfaces: asphalt, woodland roads, paths, fields and woodland.
Some stretches require good technical skills, or at least a good command of your bike and an awareness of the dangers and risks associated with MTB. We suggest you always check the conditions of the trails before you set out, or enlist the help of an MTB guide.
VAL GARES and MALGA STIA
Tour in Val Gares, with a stop recommended in Canale d’Agordo and a visit to the house where Pope John Paul I was born.
This fun itinerary is suitable for everyone. From the asphalt road, it makes its way along paths and dirt roads surrounded by woodland, where you can enjoy the gentle murmur of the little watercourses that sprint through the landscape, and the chirping of the birds in the trees.
On this delightful journey through nature, the first stop we recommend is in Canale d’Agordo, the birthplace of Albino Luciani, Pope John Paul I, for a visit to the museum and the home where he spent his childhood; afterwards, you can take a wander amid the old haysheds and through the little streets of the village, heading in the direction of the unspoilt Val di Gares.
In this spellbinding valley, you can admire splendid waterfalls, part of the peaks in the Pale di San Martino group, with the three Campanili dei Lastei, a view of the Comelle Plateau, and the little village of Gares, which offers the chance to explore some local history. The more experienced can continue along the route, which now becomes more challenging, paying a visit to the long-established Malga Stia alpine dairy hut, where you can enjoy the wholesome produce and typical flavours of the Belluno Dolomites, as you admire the splendid views out over the Agner, Comelle and Focobon.

VAL DEL BIOIS TOUR
A tour around the Biois Valley, with a stop recommended at the Church of San Simon in Vallada Agordina
Long, enjoyable round-trip itinerary. Not particularly challenging from a technical point of view, but does require a good level of physical fitness.
This route runs through a number of municipalities in the valley, offering the chance to test your abilities on various types of terrain: from dirt and woodland roads to paths across woods and fields, surrounded by a landscape that includes part of the heart of the Dolomites. It starts out from the centre of Falcade, moves on to the neighbourhood of Sappade and then heads towards Vallada and San Tomaso. From here, via Cencenighe, it moves on to Canale d’Agordo and the head of the Val di Gares.
Along the way, you can admire the pinnacles of the Focobon, Mulaz and the Campanili dei Lastei in the Pale di San Martino group; the queen of the Dolomites, the Marmolada, appears beyond the Cime d’Auta peaks, while also visible on the horizon is the Civetta and a series of other splendid mountains.
The itinerary also offers the chance to delve into the history of the marvellous Biois Valley: as you make your way through the various neighbourhoods, you can admire the traditional tabià haysheds, old dairies (some of them still in operation, others used for museum purposes), fountains, frescoes and historical buildings, such as the Church of San Simon in Vallada Agordina, especially interesting from an artistic point of view.
This trip back in time offers a glimpse into what life was once like in the valley.
There are numerous variants for the more experienced, and plenty of places where you can stop and recharge your batteries, or just relax.

PALE DI SAN MARTINO PLATEAU – COMELLE
High-altitude route for more expert MTB fans.
This long, very demanding itinerary starts out from Falcade.
Take the Molino-Le Buse gondola lift and the Le Buse-Laresei chairlift, then head towards the Laresei Refuge.
Pedal down towards the Valles Pass, then along the national road towards the head of the Val Venegia, which appears in all its splendour. Continue along both asphalt road and technical paths towards the village of San Martino di Castrozza, from where two lift facilities will take you up to the foot of Cima Rosetta (2600 m).
From here, cross the plateau as far as the Rosetta Refuge, which offers spectacular views of the Dolomites on all sides, which will accompany you right across the plateau. Cycle along an old military road, with some very rough ground covered in large pieces of gravel that create the sensation of an almost lunar landscape.
Many of the technical points along the route can also be tackled on foot, such as the Cengia di Antermarucol ledge, a splendid exposed mule track looking down onto the Gares Valley, which, almost at the end of the plateau, leads onto the enjoyable Campo Boaro paths until the Malga Campigat alpine hut.
It is here that the final challenge awaits you: a technical descent into the undergrowth that leads to the Capanna Cima Comelle Refuge in the marvellous Gares Valley.
