MOUNTAIN SAFETY – How to stay safe in the mountains

We recommend following the Italian Alpine Club’s six rules for responsible trekking:
    1. For your outings in the mountains, choose itineraries suited to your physical and technical abilities, gathering information on the area you wish to visit and ensuring you have an adequate map of the area. If you intend to go walking in a group, plan the time required considering those with the slowest pace.
    2. Make sure you have adequate clothing and equipment for the difficulty and the length of the hike, and that you have all you need for potential emergency situations in your backpack, as well as basic first aid supplies.
    3. It is preferable not to go hiking in the mountains alone, and in all cases, you should leave details of your planned itinerary with someone, and let them know when you come back.
    4. Check the weather forecast before setting out, and keep a constant eye on how the weather develops.
    5. If in doubt, turn back. Sometimes it’s better to turn back rather than risk being caught up in bad weather or trying to overcome levels of difficulty for which you do not have the strength, technical ability or adequate equipment. Before you set out, study alternative routes back.
    6. Bring any rubbish down with you. Respect the plants and wildlife. Avoid venturing off the path unnecessarily and taking shortcuts. Respect the local cultures and traditions, and remember you are a guest here in the mountains.
We suggest you always contact an alpine guide.
