Museums in Val del Biois
Val del Biois boasts two important museums dedicated to 2 important men, very different to eachother but who shared the same love for their birth place.
MUSAL in CANALE D’AGORDO and MUSEO AUGUSTO MURER in FALCADE.
Another important site is Latteria Museo in Feder which tells of the ancients rural activities of the valley.
MUSAL in CANALE D’AGORDO
Canale d’ Agordo is famous mainly because it’s Albino Luciani’s birth place. He was Pope John Paul I who died suddenly after a short Papacy of only 33 days.
On the main square of the village there is the MusAl, the museum which tells of the pope’s life. It was opened on 26th August 2016 and it is now ruled by the Fondazione Papa Luciani Onlus.
The Museum is hosted on the 4 floors of an ancient building and tells of the history of the valley and its most important inhabitants, the highest floors focus on the Pope’s life.
Next to the museum there is San Giovanni Battista Church which dates back to 1300.
200 m from the museum there is also Albino’s birth house, a humble building dating back to the end of ‘800. It belonged to Luciani’s family till 2019 when this was sold to Vittorio Veneto Diocese and it was opened to public as a museum. You can visit Albino’s private rooms where he used to live when he was young or when he came in Canale during his holiday when he was already an important clergyman.
There is a unique ticket for both the sites, MusAL and birth house.

MUSEO AUGUSTO MURER
It was planned and built in 1972 by Architect Giuseppe Davanzo, and since 1985 when Augusto died it has been a meeting point for many artists.
Augusto Murer was born in Falcade in 1922 and the museum gathers some of the most significant works. Many of them are exposed outside in the garden
The modern vertical shape of the building is far from the traditional alpine style but it reminds to the verticality of the trees. The museum marks the way back of the artist to his beloved mountains.
The visits to the atelier are organized by Ornella, Augusto’s daughter who tells of her father, the artist and his life with passion.
During the pandemic time when the museum was closed, many works and sculptures were moved outside creating a sort of open air museum. Many works were displayed on the Piana, on the parks, outside the rifugios … so visitors had the possibility to enjoy art even with the restriction imposed by covid.
Summer Timetable
The museum will be open from the end of June to the beginning of September from 10.00 to 12.00 and from 15.00 to 19.00.

MUSEO LATTERIA DI FEDER
The small building is located in a little hamlet over Canale d’Agordo, Feder.
The origins
It seems that the building was built in 1886 and during the years it was expanded with other rooms and equipment. It was the place were all the milk of the nearby animals was collected and transformed into cheese and dairy products.
In 1944 when almost all the village was destroyed by a fire the Latteria was preserved, and a family which lost the house was hosted here.
From 1950 to 1975 part of the building was used as school while in the other part the activity of transforming milk continued till 1973, when it stopped because of the the high costs and the difficulty to find a dairyman.
The restoration and transformation of the Latteria as a museum begun at the end of 90s. The history of the activity was reconstructed by the old men of the village and all the original tools were cleaned up and classified. The present arrangement of the rooms and tools reflect the original organization of the latteria when it worked.
